The question of WHERE
has been in our DNA since 1998.

We started as a geoinformatics research group in Heidelberg. Today we build the spatial foundation that intelligent systems use to understand and act on the physical world. A build that has been underway for more than two decades. Here is how it happened.

We originated as a research group at the European Media Lab in Heidelberg, using the city and its millions of visitors as a testbed. We sought to answer: how do you communicate location to mobile users, and what can machine learning do for geoinformatics?

Before cloud and edge became mainstream, we were building software architectures for large-scale location data and applying AI and machine learning to understand it. This work laid the foundation for everything that followed, including our early spatial AI agents.

Long before digital twins and Spatial AI became mainstream, we demonstrated how distributed spatial data could be fused into a shared operational model for an entire city. This laid another foundation for today’s live spatial models.

The physical world doesn’t stop at the building entrance. With DeepMap®, we developed one of the first platforms to seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor environments into a single 3D spatial model, bringing geometry, navigation and spatial context together long before digital twins became mainstream.

Operating large-scale events requires more than static maps. DeepMap® continuously reflected changing environments and guided millions of visitors through complex venues, demonstrating how live spatial models support decisions in dynamic physical spaces.

Industrial AI requires interoperability. With leading technology companies, we co-initiated omlox, the world’s first open standard for industrial locating. The introduction of the omlox Hub created a vendor-neutral layer that unified heterogeneous positioning technologies, laying the foundation for today’s open spatial ecosystems.

Open ecosystems require independent governance. We transferred the omlox Hub specification to PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI), ensuring that the world’s first open locating standard would remain vendor-neutral, community-driven, and accessible to the entire industry.

Flowcate became an independent company with one clear mission: turning open standards into enterprise software. With DeepHub®, the first omlox-certified Hub, we transformed the interoperability layer behind omlox into the trusted spatial foundation for industrial applications and the next generation of Industrial AI.

The journey comes full circle. DeepHub® no longer simply integrates location data. It creates a live spatial model that intelligent systems can understand, reason over and act upon. The AI isn’t new; we’ve been building AI-driven spatial intelligence since 2002. What’s new is that today’s AI can finally reason over a trusted spatial foundation and act on it autonomously.
